Going to the beach is great. To keep it that way and not to end up at a local police station filing reports for stolen items, follow the ensuing 10 recommendations:

  1. Don’t go alone to the beach but always with someone, or a group of family and/or friends. This way it is easier to look out for belongings or guard them while the others want to go to the water.Keep your bags in the centre of the group rather than at the perimeter where someone can easily snatch it and run away with it.
  2. Be alert and have low profile. When you arrive to the beach with a bag in your hand and a towel on your shoulder, you might call for attention from thieves. Place your bag inside the towel before arriving to the beach and carry it under your arm as it was only a large piece of towel.
  3. In case you are alone on the beach, chose to be visible. If you are visible to many people, then thieves might not want to risk making a move. The centre of a populated area of the beach is probably safer rather than its perimeter.
  4. Be in the line of sight of a lifeguard or security guard, their presence can be deterrent for thieves.
  5. Leave your valuables at home. Don’t take jewels, large amount of cash and several credit cards to the beach with you. Lock them in a hotel safe or hide them in the trunk of your car.
  6. Prior of travelling purchase an anti-theft bag, which can be fixed to an object , or buy a small item disguised as hair spray, Coke bottle or hair brush, to keep your valuables inside.
  7. In case you are alone, have a waterproof case to hang around your neck and will protect your electronic devices and cash from water. (Don’t lose it in a wave!)
  8. Wrap the strap of your bag around your arm when sunbathing. This way thieves cannot have access to your bag without you noticing. You can also use your bag as a pillow.
  9. Don’t go walking alone on the beach at night.
  10. Purchase travel insurance.
